The MN Fashion Awards
& Rumble on the Runway
What's better than a red carpet, celebrity fashion show in Minneapolis? A red carpet fashion show with Maserati's and James Bond. WarPaint International Beauty Agency was invited to produce the opening runway segment for the 1st annual Rumble on the Runway | MN Fashion Awards. Being a first year event I was skeptical at first, but after taking a look at the size and theme of the event I knew this would be a great opportunity for my team. The other 3 teams that we were to compete against were: Atmosfere, MINQ & Showroom. At that point I was very intrigued and said I would propose this fun idea to the team. When I did, the vote was unanimous and everyone wanted in, and got especially excited when I told them the theme was "James Bond: Dressed to Kill". We immediately got to planning.
As a lover of James Bond and everything fashion, ideas of what we wanted to put together for a show came very easy to myself and the rest of the team. I've been going to fashion events in Minneapolis for years and at the end of every show my husband and I would go home and think of ways that runway shows could be different in Minneapolis; this seemed like a great fit. The team and I quickly secured our models, music, and local boutiques to pull clothing from and got to work concepting looks for hair & makeup. There were two artistic leads for hair and makeup, WarPaint artisans Benjamin (Artistic Director & Hair Artisan) and Carla (Artistic Director & Makeup Artisan) concepted some amazing hair & makeup designs together. Everyone on the team played a major roll in the success of Rumble on the Runway for WarPaint.
The morning of October 4th, 2014 was an early one, with our first model arriving on site at 8am. Our artisans and models took over our downtown apartment and made it their home for the day. It was so much fun watching everyone get glammed up! My husband, Sam, was on hand and prepared some great food for everyone and of course, we kept the coffee brewing.
Being that it was a competition we were limited on the number of people we could have on our team. All together we had 11 models, a team of 6 hair and makeup artisans, 1 creative director, 1 musician, 1 DJ & 4 clothing/jewelry vendors. Since we aren't a clothing boutique we had to spread our wings and source from all of our contacts. We chose to pull looks from Second Debut Consignment Shoppe, Flirt Boutique, Perfect Fit Gear, and M.Bridget Designs. Our idea for our segment was to tell a story of James Bond. We were given specific criteria that we were going to be judged on that night: hair, makeup, overall creativity, use of theme and length of the segment (which was to be 10-13 minutes long no more no less). When it came time to choose our music my husband and I decided to involve our friend Joe Hastings, better known as Hastings 3000. We know him to be a James Bond fanatic and he was ecstatic to be involved with our show. He wrote the opening 2 minutes of our music entitled "In the Midst of Darkness"and performed his creation. This showcase symbolically placed him as the villain in the James Bond theme. It. Was. Epic.
We also involved Lenka Paris, better known as DJ Paris to mix our other music selections in with Joe's masterpiece. We chose "Another Way to Die" by Alicia Keys & Jack White, "Miserlou", and "Show Me How you Burlesque" by Christina Aguilera. It was perfect. The first part of our segment showcased elegant evening gowns to the song "Another Way to Die". Near the end of the song our "James Bond" aka Bill Tamlyn is killed by the seductive Janae Virnig with a single kiss on the cheek. The next portion involved Bill being brought back to life by Christine Klein (who played an amazing bond girl in a custom made white bikini from Perfect Fit Gear) and a James Bond Martini. To the audiences surprise, another sultry bond girl (Tarah Andrews) in a custom made bikini from Perfect Fit Gear, emerged and proceed to steal Bill away from Christine. Before long Bill lets the ladies know that there is plenty of James Bond to go around. :-) Our song choice of "Miserlou" was perfect for the bikini's. The third piece of our segment involved lots of beautiful and sexy lingerie from Flirt! Of course the song we chose for this portion was "Show Me How You Burlesque". Our show was a success, our models worked that runway and the timing ended up being great despite only one run through that day.
The team that took the prize that night was local boutique Atmosfere. But in the end we all won because the team-building experience and level of creativity that was brought out by WarPaint Artisans was priceless. Below are some behind the scenes and event photos from Rumble on the Runway.
